CHAPTER SIXTEEN

CHASTEN

As an alpha of my pack, I was charged with many duties. Maintaining the safety and security of those under my charge was the most important one.

This was a goal made possible only if every pack member was equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to fight if war should be declared. Every member must be a courageous soldier, willing to run headfirst into battle and tear our enemies limb from limb without hesitation or fear.

As weapons master I was proud to say that all my students would do me proud on the battlefield.

I approached the lawns of the southern gardens to find my students for this period. Several jagged boulders rested in scattered places like pieces on a game board.

Instead of lining up quietly in between the boulders like they’d been taught, the students were noisy and splayed out far and wide. Two he-wolves dangled from a nearby tree like monkeys. A few of the other he-wolves leaned on the boulders, chatting up their female classmates.

Most she-wolves lounged around cellphones in hand scrolling through social media. Meanwhile, the brand-new silver swords I’d ordered just for this week’s training decorated the grass.

Maybe I should rethink just how much faith I put in these students. But then she caught my attention.

The only one who seemed the slightest bit interested in today’s class. Livienne stood a few paces from the others, maneuvering her sword from one hand to the next, testing its weight and balance.

Something came over me as I watched her. The ground spun under me. The air smelt sweet as maple syrup and my entire body felt so light, I could drift away with the wind.

Every time. Every damn time I caught sight of her this happened. How much longer would I suffer this madness?

She was so intoxicating. Her hips’ delicate curves were so inviting. Her silky, emerald hair rippled carelessly in the wind. Her lips, so pink and full, my wolf all but demanded I kiss them. Terrifying, her beauty was terrifying.

Man, I really needed to stop staring at her before the other students saw me. Or worse, before she saw me.

Brody Bamford worked his way through the students nearing Livienne on her right side. He just about raced two other males just to get to Livienne.

His index finger tapped her shoulder and my jaw twitched. She lowered her sword, swinging her hips around to face him.

He dwarfed her, peering down at her with mischievous desire written all over his face.

He said something to her I couldn’t hear, his eyes snaked down her body as he undressed her with his carnivorous gaze.

My mate.

Rage bubbled up in my belly. Scenes of Brody’s dismembered head rolling on the grass, played in my head like a movie, tempting me to make it real.

His filthy paws creeped around her waist, infuriating my wolf.

“Hey! Paws off, Hornball.” Livy gripped but that didn’t seem to discourage Brody as he gripped her tighter.

I raced for the pair. My hand gunned for Brody’s arm, ripping it free of her with a violent thrust.
